4k Ocean
Students in this group were in the Ocean room! We gathered on the carpet to converse about what exactly is in the ocean, and why things farther away close up might seem super big or small. We also touched up our scissor and gluing skills!
Materials Used
Construction Paper
Crayon
Sharpie
Glue
Scissors
-
Construction paper background (blue) as well as yellow and purple (with shapes, trianges and ovals already drawn) were set on table ready to go
-
Students were called to the carpet first, where we talked about what shapes could make a fish.
-
We then reviewed cutting, where our thumb faces the sky, and our helper fingers face the floor.
-
Students were then released slowly to grab a scissors and go cut their fish shapes out
-
-
Once they were close to being done, we gathered back at the carpet to review glue sponges to glue our fish to our background! As well as what creatures are in the ocean! We also took it into more depth and conversed about what we can find on the bottom of the ocean, as well as why some fish look teeny tiny! (Because they are further away! And vice versa.)
-
Students were then dismissed to tables to finish cutting and start gluing, and once I noticed they were finishing up with that, I handed out black markers so they could start drawing their other ocean creatures and add a face to their fish!
-
And finally to add more detail, crayons were passed out to color in their drawings!
-
We cleaned up for the day, and they set their fish on a clean table to dry!

This lesson was made to challenge 4k students' thoughts on what they have learned about the ocean through their ocean classroom! Fine motor skills were also touched upon and practiced through cutting their own shapes out- as well as practicing a math standard of shape review! I also introduced a new (maybe far fetched idea) of spatial reasoning, and why something far away might look so small, and vice versa!
