My Imaginary Animal

In this lesson, My Imaginary Animal 5th graders will be creating their own animal, using the body parts of minimum three chosen animals. Any drawing or painting medium will be used to create this hybrid/mutant creature. Students will demonstrate understanding of different parts of an animals body (legs, arms, tails, heads, torsos, ETC) and be able to create a cohesive design of their own.

Learning Supports

  1. Reflection (responding to art)

  2. Anchor Chart (developing works of art/design)

  3. Looking and talking activity (relating art to context)

  4. Video demo of painting techniques

Accommodations/Adaptions

Students with disabilities will always be in and out of Art classrooms, and may need some adaptions and accommodations to therefore have fun, participate and succeed! One accommodation you will see in my classroom that can help out or students with visual impairments would be construction paper crayons and markers, that show up a lot brighter and are more vibrant to students who can see slightly, this will help them be able to differentiate shapes and colors to the best of their abilities. For those students who happen to be fully blind, there will be options and shapes offered to them, precut, so they are able to glue them on the paper, or use their electronic devices (if applicable). These can be utilized with the smart feature enabled touch to read, and speak to text.

This project will have lots of different media to use, mainly different papers, drawing utensils, paints, and found objects. This is part of the assignment originally, though for students who are diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), as well as Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Asperger's Syndrome who display sensory issues, this will help give them options. Imaginary Animals being a multimedia project, students with these disorders can use whatever they can use and get messy with, they can choose their safe textures and distances to create. If they so choose to use another media outside of the guidelines, they can as well. Attachments to help draw, or paint, or larger media that is easier to hold will be provided. Students with OCD may work however they so please, relating to a specific order they may need to go in. The same materials will be provided to help with any sort of mess that may end up on their skin otherwise, and cleansing wipes will be placed at every table to keep hands clean. They will work with their own set of materials, and at their own desk if they so wish.

In this classroom we aim to include everyone, Art is a class any student is able to create and push past their boundaries in. Every student deserves to have as much fun as possible, especially when being able to use their minds creatively.
